UNDERSTANDING THEMED CHINACompleted as the final assignment for CRP5850: Asian Urbanization, taught by Dr. Kris Hartley, this paper documents a brief history of theming and authenticity in Chinese architecture. Using the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, Mao's 1958 Ten Great Buildings program, and twenty first-century Macau as case studies, a loose chronology of Chinese architecture as related to political change and intention is presented. Contemporary developments in Chinese architectural policy and theory are discussed as well.
